I'm not sure that we are going to be able to find out who he came over from Ireland with, to be honest, Bren. I know we've tried that one before, but I don't think there are records of people coming over from Ireland.

Croydon only has 94 enumeration districts, not counting the institutions, so we should be able to find which of them Canterbury Road was in tomorrow. I did try a Rob* McCar* in Croydon search on ancestry to see if I could get it that way but no luck.
No, it's a bit less than 94 because it starts at 6. I hope that doesn't mean 5 of them are missing!

I was hoping Historical Directories website might help but it doesn't seem to be working this evening. I have found Canterbury Road on the 1881 census so we could try the tack of hoping some of its residents stayed put for 20 years!
This is the ref for some of the lower numbers in 1881:

Are you sure the date of the letter is 1900?
If it is you wont find Roberts parents there at the time because according to his father's Army records they didn't marry until 1908 and Robert and Kathleen were born in 1909 and 1911.
.. or have you got the wrong generation - are you hoping Trevor's ggrandparents are there - if so what are their names?
1901 – mistranscribed as McCarlie (on Ancestry)
