  • Elizabeth Gwilt

    Hello. Please can you help.
I am trying to find the maiden name of Elizabeth Gwilt born 1774
She was ? Married to Thomas Gwilt.
Her son James born i1801 in Edgton in Shropshire.
Her Daughter Eleanor ? illigitamate in 1799
    Her Daughter Ann in 1804.
    Many thanks

If you can find the baptism of the illegitimate daughter Eleanor then it should say what Elizabeth's surname was - unless it's one of those annoying ones that only says father's name, but I don't think they did that by the very end of the 18th century.

Shropshire: Lydham, Edgton, Monk Hopton, Chelmarsh, Neenton, Billingsley - Parish Registers, Hereford Diocese

03 Jun 1804 Ann, d. of Elizabeth Gwilt bap.

doesn't specify which parish but it does look as though Elizabeth wasn;t married

IGI shows Ann and James baptised at Edgton

there's also Eleanor baptised 1799 in Clun to Elizabeth with no father listed

Thomas Gwilt was the father on James second marriage certificate to Mary Dodd on the 30th December 1852. The marriage was in Hopesay. Thomas was a labourer.

Its quite possible that James invented a father, especially in view of the baptism found above. Its also possible, of course, that his father's first name was Thomas.

I think you can safely assume her maiden name was Gwilt!
