Wow thanks a heap, sorry I've taken a couple of days to reply - I've had the flu. My first brick wall is Eliza O'Dell who I believe was my gggrandmother. According to LDS she was born in 1850 in Camberwell Gt London, although another researcher says she was born in Goniston Notts c1848. I know she married Enoch Colby in Sleaford district in 1866 & died in Hull in 1885. I could not find them in 1871 or 1881 census, but the other researcher says she did - 1871 in Heckington Lincs & 1881 in Hull. I would like to know which is possibly correct & also find out more about her & her ancestry. I have her descendants, but confirmation on census records of her children would help - Sarah b1870 (my ggm), William b 1874, Elizabeth b 1876, Louisa b 1878 & John b 1880
Thanks

I think we would be better starting with your grandmother and working backwards to make sure we have the right family.
Where was Sarah born and do you have her birth certificate?
For some reason there is a family in the 1881 census clearly recorded as Smith but a name change correction made, chaning the surname to Colby
RG11; Piece: 4751; Folio: 124; Page: 5;
Enoch Smith c 1847 Heckington, Lincoln, - occ. dock labourer
Eliza Smith c 1850 Goniston, Nottinghamshire,
Mary Smith c 1867 Heckington, Lincoln,
Sarah Ann Smith c 1869 Heckington,
John Smith c 1871 Heckington, Lincoln,
Emma Smith c 1874 Hull, Yorkshire,
James Smith c 1876 Hull, Yorkshire,
William Smith c 1879 Hull, Yorkshire,
George Smith c Hull, Yorkshire, England
I presume this is where your contact is getting the places of birth from.
Does this family look right to you?
1871 census
RG10; Piece: 3352; Folio: 69; Page: 21
Enoch Colby c1846 Heckington, Lincolnshire,
Eliza Colby c 1849 Goniston, Nottinghamshire,
John Colby c1870 Heckington, Lincolnshire,
Mary Colby c 1867 Heckington, Lincolnshire,
Sarah A Colby c 1868 Heckington, Lincolnshire,
My next brick wall is my ggf Charles Douglas, as it's quite a common name in the area. He was born c1855 in Hull & married Emily Larwood in 1877. I have found them on 1881 & 1901 census & I know I could apply for the marriage cert to get confimation of father's name & address, so I could check any census records for parents & siblings, but I like to try all other avenues of research first - unfortunateley I've come to a stop so maybe someone out there can give me a helping hand.
Thanks again

If the Colby 1871 and 1881 census look right to you then I would suggest you get the marriage certificate of Eliza and Enoch
Marriages Sep 1866
COLBY Enoch
ODELL Eliza
Sleaford 7a 640
This will give you their fathers' name and occupation which will help you to trace them before marriage.
I can see there is a christening of an Eliza ODell in Camberwell on the IGI but I don't think she is yours. The census returns quite clearly state her place of birth as Nottinghamshire.
This tallies with the 1851 census where there is:
William Odell c 1827 Sandy, Bedfordshire, - occupation game keeper
Hannah Odell c1831 Gonalston, Nottinghamshire,
Eliza Odell c 1850 Gonalston, Nottinghamshire,
HO107; Piece: 2134; Folio: 66; Page: 6
Eliza's marriage certificate to Enoch should confirm whether or not this is the right family.
For some reason there is a family in the 1881 census clearly recorded as Smith but a name change correction made, chaning the surname to Colby

Hi Elaine
Yes I would say this is possibly the correct family as Enoch's middle name was Smith taken from his mother's maiden name so that could explain the mistake & I know he was born in Heckington. I don't have Sarah's birth cert but I have just applied for her marriage cert to give me (hopefully) both her's & her husband's father's names, occupations & addresses & confirmation of her correct age. Sarah's husband was George Gerome (later Jerome) who I've already had some help with - him being yet another of my brick walls!
Anyway back to Eliza - any trace of her birth?
Thanks a heap

Death: 1885 Sculcoates, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire
Marriages: Enoch Colby 1866 Sleaford, Lincoln
This is a submitted entry and therefore I would suggest you view it with caution!
Thanks Elaine - you're too quick for my typing, by the time I've typed a reply to one thread, you've already come up with something else! I think I'll have to apply for the marriage licence to get any further. Bedfordshire is one county I've not found any relations in up to now.

If the 1851 census is correct then she was born c1850 Gonalston.
Registration district for Gonalston is Southwick.
This could be her parent's marriage
Marriages Jun 1850 (from freeBMD)
Odell William
Sheppard Hannah
Southwell vol 15 page 1023
I cannot see an Eliza Odell birth registration at the moment - but there is one for Sheppard - may be she was illegitimate
Births Jun 1850
Sheppard Eliza
Southwell vol 15 page 722
I'll check the complete images on Ancestry to see if there is one for Odell.
That explains why I couldn't find them in the 1861 census
Hannah Odell has remarried!
1861 - mistranscribed as Vaeey - should be Vacey
RG9; Piece: 2345; Folio: 59; Page: 24
Household members:
William Vaeey 38
Hannah Vaeey 30
Eliza Vaeey 11
Ann Vaeey 9
William Vaeey 7
John Vaeey 3
Sarah Vaeey 8 Mo
