  • Looking for Benjamin and Hedonia Lowe and daughter Annie

    Hi there,

I was wondering if any one could help me find this family. This is what I have:

    1881 census for Kingswinford

Annie Adams aged 35 (Head, Wid)
Benjamin Lowe aged 70 (Father, retired forge roller, born Brockmore, Staffs)
    Annie G. Adams aged 11
    Charles H. Adams aged 12
    Frederick J. Adams aged 15
    John Adams aged 1
    Sarah A. Adams aged 14
    Thomas P. Adams aged 7

Annie was married to John Adams in the 1871 census. I have also found her in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

I have a possible hit for Benjamin Lowe in the 1871 census:

Benjamin Lowe aged 58, born Brackmore, Worcs, iron roller
Hedonia Lowe aged 58, born Amblecote, Worcs

I cannot find Benjamin and Hedonia in any other census and I cannot find a marriage for Benjamin and Hedonia OR for Annie Lowe and John Adams. Nor can I find a possible birth registration for Annie Lowe, so I can't order a birth certificate either!

Can anyone help me at all? I'd love to further this line and am at a full stop!

    Thanks,
    Zoe

Not sure that Hedonia is right - the 1871 census is the only "hit" on Ancestry and I can't find a death for her.

Yes, I'm not saying Hedonia is a definite, but since Benjamin's place and date of birth and occupation match, I'm pretty optimistic. The name on the image does look like Hedonia, but of course it could be a middle name or simply misheard. And it could be a second marriage.

I don't think the baptism can be correct - Bedwardine is about 20 miles away from Brockmoor, and I'd be surprised if they'd taken him to Worcester to be baptized when Dudley was a lot nearer.

There is a birth for Annie Lowe in 1844, Kingswinford. Its is on the West Midlands BMD site. Have been trying to put a link on but not having any luck.

I think this is a more likely christening for Benjamin:

            09/09/1810 Kingswinford, Staffordshire

But it still doesn't help me with finding the family with Annie as a child :(

Thanks, Pam - that at least gives me a starting point since I can order that certificate.

My goodness, I do believe I have them in 1861!

Benjaman Low aged 49, born in Kingswinford (a mile from Brockmoor), forge worker
Selina Low (looks more like Hedonia on the image) aged 49, born in Kingswinford (again, a mile from Amblecote)
A Elizabeth Lowe aged 16, born in Kingswinford, dressmaker (matches occupation on later censuses)

                          Zoe

I have direct Lowe ancestors from Kingswinford. If you come accross a Hamlet Lowe, give me a shout.

I go away and come back and its all solved! I did think Hedonia looked like it might begin with an S but couldn't figure out what it might be.
