  • I've lost my Desktop

    Hi all,

I have recently developed a problem with my Desktop. I can set a picture for it, but soon after it reverts to a black screen. Also the Shortcuts are not there. If I click on Start then on My Documents, I can find Desktop on the left under Other Places. Clicking on that brings up a page with the Shortcuts on it. I have tried resetting to an earlier date but it won't let me.

Any help, step by step, in simple words would be appreciated.

I have an appointment at 11.30 and another at 3, so am not sure when I will get back on here to collect any answers, so please don't think I'm ignoring them.

Is it supposed to be an "Active Desktop" (includes online content) or a normal one (sorry, don't know the proper word for a non-Active one!)?

      Derr....

It is normally just a picture of my choice with the various shortcuts I have made including Firefox and Incredimail.

XP Professional which was installed in the Computer when it was given to us. We keep getting a message popping up saying that our copy is not a genuine one, but it is. The original purchaser had a multi-use licence or something which, as we do not have one, means that we can't have it accepted at Microsoft. If it had been a single use one it would have been no trouble.

I suspect that the reason for our current problem may be that we tried to download the offered upgrades but "Computer says No."

            Oh yes, sounds likely.

You have probably done this already, but if you google Microsoft Genuine Advantage desktop you will find lots of information about it.

              Especially this one:
              http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Scroll down to the part of "Overview" headed "Black desktop background" for the bad news.

Jim, if you right click on My Computer and choose Properties, one of the sections on the first page is labeled "Registered to:". The second or third line will be a long string of numbers (four groups with dashs between then - this is called the product id).

If you can PM that to me (you really should not post it on a public forum) i will look it up for you and can advise further.
