  • Ancestry transcriber's triumph!

    Finally found poor Benjamin Sayle.

The whole family were transcribed as JAGLA, and he was transcribed as

    PRENGA JAGLA.

    No wonder he was hiding.

lol! They've surpassed themselves getting both names wrong! That's better than my Eliza Ann Rellpiene (Pierce) and her husband Edmund :(

Why is the Isle of Man recorded as part of Anglesey registration district (sub district Holyhead)?? My geography is rubbish, but even I know the IoM isn't in Wales! lol

Are you sure it isn't Ynys Mon?

                Are you sure what isn't????!

                Ancestry says the household is:

                Civil Parish or Township: Conchan
                Town: Douglas
                County/Island: Isle of Man

                and that's apparently in:

                Registration district: Anglesey
                Sub registration district: Holyhead

Oooh I've just noticed the Channel Islands are in Wales as well!!

Civil Parish or Township: St Brelade
                County/Island: Jersey
                Country: Channel Islands
                Registration district: Anglesey
                Sub registration district: Holyhead

I suppose Anglesey is the "last" district in Eng/Wales, and Ancestry didn't know what to do with these "other" censuses?

                It's possibly only the 1861 that's wrong?

My personal favourite is my Melhuish lot. Tried looking for them in 1891 when I'd only had Ancestry about a month...lol

                  Have a look at this:

                  RG12, Piece 2617, Folio 44, Page 32.

At least they did put a correction in for me......but Felelkniol????

Oh, okay, I see, Merry - I thought maybe it was really supposed to be Ynys Mon but they had put Man in instead of Mon but no, it is a big mess!

Well, you'll never guess how I FINALLY found him...by searching for Margaret Edwards, a granddaughter.

I didn't have much hope that she would be with the family, but she was, and flicking down the list of Margaret Edwards, head of household JAGLA, I felt was worth a look.

I didn't notice the 1861 information about registration districts, lol!

But it's funny how you sort of "know" someone didn't die, and keep on looking for them long after you ought to have given up.

Well, Jagla isn't the first mistranscription I'd think of, so well done. But I do think my Stevens take the prize - mistranscribed as Howard, they don't have any of the same letters.
