  • Free Software to backup to DVD

I asked a while if anyone knew of any free or cheap software to back up data files and photographs to a DVD.

All the programmes in the shops are far too complicated for me. Maybe the PC Rom series do one.

Not sure why you need a program to do it, Margaret. Can you not just drag and drop the files you want onto the DVD?

      Anne,

I am not an expert on this (far from it) but I thought that you still had to burn them on.

I had Nero on my old PC and it was simple. I bought Nero 8 for this PC but it has proved a nightmare for me. Too many functions and I was never certain what I was doing so have taken it off my PC it is going cheap for someone who understands it.

I can drag the files on to my Hard Drive and Flash Pen without any problems.

Lets see what others say and I hope that they please keep it simple.

I would still suggest the Nero product, but use the Nero Express program instead. It takes you through step by step - even i use it all the time because it is simpler.

          Dave,
Thank you for your reply. I guess that you are suggesting a 'Custom Installation' and only Nero Express.
I have not put the CD into look at it again as I am afraid it will take off and upset everything again. It was difficult to uninstall and PCW told me that I needed to download a special tool to get rid of all traces of Nero. If I did not do that it would be a problem to other copying programmes. Way beyond me.

Margaret - yes you are correct. Sorry I wasn't thinking straight! You do need to burn to a DVD.

I eventually got a spare hard disk - it has lots of memory and just plugs into the computer with a USB plug. You can then drag and drop to that. The advantage for backups is that there is plenty of room and you can write/delete/rewrite as often as you want.

It is a slightly more expensive option but we thought it was worth it rather than fiddling about with DVDs.

              Hi Margaret,
What about burning a data CD or DVD using Windows Media Player? You just drag the files over and burn them as a data disc.

EDIT: that's probably not very handy after all, as it looks like you have to move things to your WMP library first.

Can't you just drag items over to the CD/DVD using Windows Explorer (Start > Computer) and then burn the CD/DVD?
Or select the files in Windows Explorer and then click "Burn" in the menu at the top of the screen.

                Anne,
I have an external HD and it is very usefull together with a handfull of Flash Pens. The reason for the CD/DVD was to copy my Pictures to it so that I could put them on the TV for my husband to see. He will not come near my PC. He tells me he had enough of them when he worked and never wants to see another.
I have today had my camera card copied to a CD in a store 'B' for £2.00 and it is excellent.
I am going to try Cloggie's idea in a moment I think I used to that with XP but not so confident with Vista.
Will edit this thread if I suceed.
Thank you Sarah for the idea.

I don't have any special software installed, just what was already on the computer.

I just right click on the pictures I want to copy to DVD and then click send to DVD drive.

You can also create a cd or dvd from Picasa, the free photo programme.
