    I'm struggling with the name and place of the wife quoted towards the bottom of the document;

    Mary Assunta Pirata???

    Place possibly somewhere in Malta?

    That looks like her name. The Assunta is a Catholic middle name. The place is Floriana, Malta.

      hmmmm

      I stupidly had the 1901 return where he is listed as a soldier but overlooked the entry in the WWI stuff several times. He is the mystery one in a family group, looks like the Malta link may explain why to an extent.

      Thanks for the place name.

        The marriage seems to be recorded in the Overseas BMDs - twice!

        GRO INDEX ARMY MARRIAGES (1881 to 1955)

        George F Elmer / Mary A Pirata : Malta 1906 45

        George F Elmer / Mary A Pirata : Malta 1907 40

          Maybe there was a problem with the formalities for the first ceremony.

            Thanks for the extra info, looks like an e-mail to a second cousin in Italy to tell her the news. This chap is her uncle but as far as we know there seems little known about him, maybe it might ring a few bells somewhere.
