    Hi
This is my first post .
My great grandmother x 2 Catherine McDonald was born in Brixton Surrey
abt 1832. Her marriage cert gives her father's name as Robert.
The only record I can find that could be her was for a Catherine McDonald in the Bermondsey establishment. I am guessing this is a work house.
Is there any way of discovering if this could be her and why she is there.

    regards Patricia.

    Hi Patricia, Welcome to FTF

Could you tell us when she married and to whom?

Was there an occupation recorded for Robert?

Catherine Married James Castle in St Mary's Newington in the 1 Aug 1853
Roberts occupation was given as a Labourer.

There are three McDonalds in the Bermondsey Merton Infant Poor Establishment in 1841:

          Michael 10
          Catherine 9
          William 8

          Maybe they are siblings?

This is a complete stab in the dark, but there are very few McDonald families in Croydon district in 1841, so there's a fair chance (say 50%) this death is one of Catherine's family:

            Deaths Mar 1841
McDonald Mary Ann Croydon 4 74

It could even be her mother.

There don't seem to be any Robert McDonald deaths between 1837 and 1841 in Surrey.

Have you found Catherine in 1851?

I see in 1861 and 1871 Catherine is recorded as older than would support a birth year of 1832. Did she give an age on her marriage cert?

In 1861 Catherine is listed as 38
In 1871 she is listed as 45
In 1881 she is listed as 55

I wasn't sure if I'd found her or not after that!

Hmmmmm......so she is 27 in 1851, which ties in with all the later censuses.

Seems unlikely she could be nine in 1841 then?

There's a 15 year-old Catherine McDonald in Camberwell (FS) in 1841, but she says she wasn't born in Surrey. However, an awful lot of the born in or out of county Yes and No's do seem to be wrong.

                          Hi
Thank you for responding to my message. The marriage certificate just says of full age,
so is not much help on her right age.
I have a death index under the name of Casselle in 1886 giving her birthdate abt 1827
so it is likely this would be closer to her birthdate than the 1832
