  • Passports for emigration??

This may be a dumb question but were passports required for emigration from the UK to Canada in 1894?
I have one of those bees in the bonnet and am rolling through passport applications with gay abandon in the vague hope of increasing my toy hammer to a jack hammer on this particular brick wall!!!

Passports were not mandatory for British Citizens travelling anywhere until 1914, so you may or may not find one. I have never found passports for my ancestors when they travelled all over Europe in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Thanks Janet, thought that was the case - I had that in the back of the brain but I was "hot on the trail" at that point and racing through passport applications. On to the next idea!!
