Thank you for looking Alan, but it is the occupation of William Machin towards the bottom of the page which I can't make out.

Alan - no need to apologise, I am very grateful for another pair of eyes.

There's another pair of eyes here - but apart from Militia Man I have absolutely no idea what it says!

Definitely starts with S - matches the S of Sickness just below.
2nd letter is either a
q
or
g
then looks like
uee
so far Squee ..... next letter possibly
z
.... a Squeezer .... ??

lol Elaine - like you and Alan, I could see Squee but cannot make that into anything military-related.
Maybe Squeezer??

Looking on the 1881 census where you can search by occupation, there is such a thing as a Potters Squeezer - but I cannot see the Militia link.

Maybe the a after the do.do. means "and" - ie he is in the militia
and
a squeezer. Staffs is pottery territory.
There are too many William Machins in 1881 for me to identify the right one to see his occupation then.
This was the only army-type link I could find for squeezer and I can't make sense of it -

Thanks for trying Sue. It's good to know google is so quick to pick up FTF postings!
