  • Missing in 1861? Help please!

One of the daughter's of my 2xg-grandparents was Isabella Sage from Chew Magna, Somerset.

She married Charles Gray in Q2 1859 in Bristol District.

In Q4 1860 their first child, George William Gray, was reg in Bristol District.

    In 1871 their details were:

Charles Gray head m 35 Porter Coach Builder b Somerset, Taunton
Isabella Gray wife m b Somerset, Chew Magna
George W Gray son 10 b Bristol, Gloucestershire
and a couple more children, b after 1861.

living at 13 Pipe Lane, St Augustine, Bristol

Can anyone find any of this family in 1861?

It's probably not going to help but can you give me the 1871 reference - cannot see them with the details you have given.

        Here they are:

        RG10; Piece: 2534; Folio: 40; Page: 29

The census transcriber seems to have taken his/her teeth out for Isabella's transcription!

I have tried most of my old ploys without success so far. Mind you, I'm a bit rusty. I haven't had Ancestry since the spring until a couple of days ago :D

I don't suppose you want to get George's birth certificate to see what the address was on that?

No luck on 1861, but I have a possible for Isabella and George in 1891 (don't know whether you already have it):

                              Piece 1981, Folio 137, Page 8

                                Yep, that's right!

                                Charles died in 1872.

Kite, I know you are right, but I don't think I will be getting the birth cert as I don't really need it for any other purpose. I doubt even if the 1861 census record was easy to find, that it would tell me very much, it's just annoying they won't show themselves!

My main problem with my Sages comes after 1871/1881 when there must have been a bomb dropped in Somerset as instead of staying in the same few villages as they probably had for generations, they upsticks and appear all over the place - Wales - Bath - Bristol centre etc. I have been looking for the deaths of Isabella's parents for years, but can't narrow it down much as they had common names, vague ages and could have died almost anywhere. Very inconsiderate :(
