    Newington, Surrey - registration district
    1837 - 1869 Newington
    1870 - 1889 St Saviour Southwark

    possible:
    Deaths Jun 1853
    Morton Richard Newington 1d 164

Cannot see anything for Mary in either of those two registration districts.

Are you sure that Mary died between 1861 and 1871?

I see from the 1861 census that she was born c 1807.
There is a death on freeBMD in the right registration district that would fit her age

      Deaths Sep 1881
      Morton Mary age 74
      St. Saviour 1d 103

Could this be Mary in 1881?

I wonder if this is Mary in 1871, listed as Martin.

Sarah is listed on both the 1871 and 1881 with mother Mary.

you are a legend elaine. these mortons have never been easy to research.
i have trouble with richard and mary's son, john in the 1901. i cant find him or his wife.

but i know they were alive until 1921, when the death registrations are for yorkshire.

john was born in 1842, st anne soho. he married marian vye gadd in 1865, marylebone. she was born 1840, chichester. i have them in all census except 1901. would you take a look and see if i missed them?

Elaine, in 1891 they were in Camberwell, but one of their older sons had moved to Hunslet by 1901 (Thomas born Balham). I can't find Marian etc but have to go out now (only looked for 5 mins!). Sorry, don't have refs as closed Ancestry before seeing your post.

it looks right. i mean how many marian's were born in 1840, chichester, that had a daughter edith and a husband who was a commision agent?

a london accent could be misunderstood by a yorkshire enumerator right?
anyone else with this census would think its they're family?

soz, dont mean to doubt the superpowers of merry, but i've only ever had another bad mistrancription. marya chrosfield.

Oops, I'm back for five mins!

Well, I did a lot of wrong searches first!

Eventually I just searched born Chichester around 1840 and living in Hunslet. Would have tried living in Leeds next if I hadn't found them! I'd already tried John, occ Commission agent on the TNA index, but that didn't work because he was listed as james!!

                                  Going out again!
