Royal Naval Reserve

One of my ancestors is reputed to have been a "big cheese" in the Royal Naval Reserve in the late 1800s. According to the National Archives site, I'd find him in ADM 240. Has anyone been down this road?

I have no expereience with Reserves, but apparently my ggg grandfather should have been in a file at TNA. Nobody could ever find it and the staff there said it obviously didn't exist anymore.(???)
That was when I contacted Kevin Asplin who sorted it all for me.

He would be my first contact if I had any military type questions again.
