ok, so here goes the census info i have.

    1841- cathair, applecross

john bethune- age 30. no clue who he is.a cartwright.

    dugald matheson- age 50, b.1791. a shepard
    anne- age 20,b.1821
    mary- age 18, b,1823
    murdoch- age 18, b.1823
    catherine- age 15, b.1826
    rebecca- age 13, b.1828
    alexr- age 11, b.1830

    and 1851-kenloch, applecross

dugald mathesin- age 60, b.1791, applecross. farmer of 2 and a half acres, grand serv. head.
mary- age 28, b.1823, applecross. daughter.
alexander- age 21, b.1830, applecross. son.

ok. went throught he igi, and i know its not complete, but i found possibly a first marriage?

rebecca was christened in 1827, and her brother alexander in 1830.
they are the kids of dugald matheson and rebecca mclennan.

anne and catherine's baptisms arnt there.

but twins mary and murdoch are. but there mother is beatrix mckenzie.

i cant find any marriages for dugald. but, it looks as though he first married beatrix, and had anne, mary and murdoch. i dont know whch marriage catherine fits into. then he maried rebecca and had rebecca and alexander.

i dont know when dugald or his wives died, and three of his kids sailed to vic with another matheson family, where they are called nieces and nephew. but i cant find the link for that either, though i am a descendant of both matheson families.

does this theory fit together? any ideas?

I would try looking on Scotland's People if I were you because they have some stuff that isn't on the IGI.
