  • Different places with the same names

Through my work on the POW project, particularly in Yorkshire, I have come to realise just how many places ther are with the same name. I have just put some pics by Elizabeth Herts in the wiki but when I first saw them, I checked to see if we already had them, as the place names were familiar. I looked at Sowerby & discovered that Tom had already put up pics for there, but when I saw the pics were of different churches, I checked genuki & sure enough, there are 2 Sowerbys, one in the old Thirsk parish & the other in Halifax, as well as a Sowerby Bridge.
I had a similar problem with a pic from Carlton taken by Ann L in Darlo, when I checked Genuki, I discovered that there were 7 different Carltons & that was just in Yorkshire.
If other counties have similar problems, it amazes me that we ever manage to locate people on the census.

I think Yorkshire is probably the worst for that kind of thing because of the size of the county, Lynn. There is a page on GENUKI, I think, called "Where is it in Yorkshire?" to help with locating places. But of course most counties have at least a few duplicate lace names.

Yes Kate, I use that page all the time. It is just amazing to find so many with the same name in the same county

My Yorkshire nightmare is Thornton - which one did they mean?

          Thornton (E)
          Thornton (N) : Coxwold
          Thornton (N) : Stainton
          Thornton (W) : Bradford
          Thornton Bridge (N) : Brafferton
          Thornton Dale (N)
          Thornton Hill (N) : Coxwold
          Thornton In Craven (W)
          Thornton In Lonsdale (W)
Thornton Le Beans (N) : North Otterington
Thornton Le Clay (N) : Foston
Thornton Le Moor (N) : North Otterington
          Thornton Le Street (N)
          Thornton Lodge (W) : Almondbury
Thornton On The Hill (N) : Coxwold
          Thornton Risebrough (N) : Normanby
          Thornton Rust (N) : Aysgarth
          Thornton Steward (N)
          Thornton Watlass (N)
Thornton Watlass Hall (N) : Thornton Watlass
Thornton le Dale, see Thornton Dale (N) :

Then we have the reversed names:
          Burton Constable
          Constable Burton - miles apart
          Janet in Yorkshire

The Prestons aren't quite so bad Merry, at least they aren't all in the same county.
As Janet has shown, Yorkshire is a nightmare

I have an ancestor born in North Kingston, Dorset. I've googled, with a notable lack of success. I think it was only by reading the VCH that I discovered where it actually was. Trouble is that the names the locals use aren't necessarily those used today.

Devon is notorious for having lots of hamlets with the same name. Norfolk isn't so bad, but you can get into a pickle if you don't define the place (Hempstead by Holt, Little Saxlingham, Hackford cum Whitwell etc)
                  Phoenix - with charred feathers
Researching Skillings from Norfolk, Sworn from Salisbury and Adams in Malborough, Devon.

                    Merry

You missed out Preston in Hertfordshire!

There are also two Woodmancotes in Gloucestershire, not that far apart. Lots of Langleys all over as well.

and as you will know Lynn, the Kirby's can sometimes be a bit troublesome!

                      Remembering: Cuthbert Gregory 1889 - 1916, George Arnold Connelly 1886 - 1917, Thomas Lowe Davenport 1890 - 1917, Roland Davenport Farmer 1885 - 1916, William Davenport Sheffield 1879 - 1915, Cuthbert Gregory 1918 - 1944

I'm with Tom on the Kirkbys! Especially as it means church.
On my list is Kirkby Ireleth, which I'm assuming must be Kirkby-in-Furness, as I've done Ireleth, which is with Askam(-in-Furness), which in turn is not to be confused with Askham, which is somewhere northward from here.

I know that there are a fair few Evertons around, but I still reckon that Yrkshire is the worst for using the same place name repeatedly.

Can I add the three Carlton's in Nottinghamshire (that I know of) to your Yorkshire collection

I've had problems with Sibthorpe ( 2 in Notts) and Upton as well.........
