  • Historical Directories - just checking

I seem to have lost my many saved entries from Historical Directories somewhere and am going to have to start collecting them all again.

I'm dreading the task because the site is always horrendously slow for me. So, I just thought I'd check whether this is still a general problem, or whether any particular browser is known to be better than others. I'm wondering whether it would be worth downloading Opera.

I didn't know you could save entries! It doesn't seem to be particularly slow for me considering the size of each page, but I usually leave the page to load in one window while doing something else in another one.

I find it slow, but like KiteRunner I am usually doing other things in other windows too. When I get back to HD I often forget what I was looking for!

I was dead chuffed when I went to Guildhall in London to check parish registers to find that they had tons of London directories, both paper versions and on microfilm. Heaven!

Kite - I think I probably saved them via print screen but I haven't done it for ages. It's the folder in My Docs which seems to have gone awol.

Nell - I usually open another page while waiting too. I was just hoping for a shorter way as I'm starting from scratch again.

I can't get it to open at all tonight in firefox or IE.:(

Historical Directories isnt coming up for me either - hope its just a temporary glitch.
The ones I have saved from there were in PDF format if that helps you find them on your computer.

Thanks Jewels. I'll go and have another hunt - for PDFs this time!

Hope the failure to load is just temporary!

It's working OK for me at the moment.

I use Opera, which is faster than Firefox and IE, but I still find the site slow (however, I'm on dial-up).

Spoke too soon - it's bringing up the list of directories, but not loading them.

Oh dear. First Northern Rock, then Fannie Mae & Freddie whatever, then Lehman Brothers, then Bradford & Bingley and Iceland and now no Hugh Wallis or historical directories.

                    Time to panic!

Mary - I keep meaning to try Opera, so maybe this is the push I needed.

Nell -when I read about global meltdown, I didn't know it was going to include genealogy

The only trouble with Opera, which I think I mentioned on another thread, is that there are some sites it can't cope with - mainly those involving passwords. It seems to be a problem with Javascript.

I use Firefox for Ancestry and buying stuff from TNA, and Opera for pretty much everything else.

I'll give Opera a go tomorrow. The internet seems to be a bit iffy for me tonight - this site is taking ages to load pages and yahoo won't let me into my mail. Historical Directories, on the other hand, has just opened at top speed lol
