  • The name Mogene?

I've come across the birth of an Annie Mogene M. M. Holliday June Q 1882 Cardiff.

Mogene is not a name anywhere in the ancestry of this family, as far as I can see, and googling, LDS etc suggest it is a surname of Danish origin.

Annie's mother is of Italian Swiss/English descent, her father of Welsh.

I wondered if anyone is familiar with the name, either as a fore or surname.

There's a chance that it is mis-spelt on the index, I suppose - if you get the cert you will be able to check that. I've not seen it before, I'm afraid.

Kite - thanks. I did wonder if the registrar was having a bit of a turn at the time - especially with two more Ms after the Mogene. Only one of the other 7 children had a middle name at all and that was just James.

The cert will have to wait though. She's OH's gt grandmother's sister and my cert budget, such as it is nowadays, is being hoarded for my side!!

It's not Italian. Might be a misspelled Imogen, or Megan.

My first thought was Imogen - do you think it is derived from that?

Good ideas Mary and Elizabeth! I couldn't think of anything remotely similar.

I'll have to see if there's a Welsh language version of Imogen and Megan - that might account for the odd spelling.

Welsh girls names beginning Mo here

Imogen derives from Innogen, a Shakespearean character, so not sure there'd be a Welsh equivalent.

I searched for the name Mogene on Ancestry and see a Mogene Calde in the Scotland 1871 census and it's a male!

Thanks Nell - Morgaine looks the nearest on that site. You'd have thought a local registrar would have had a better idea of how to spell it though.

Perhaps the registrar did spell it correctly, whatever it was - and the indexer didn't!

Margaret - I'm sorry , I didn't spot your reply when I posted earlier. I've just tried to find your Mogene in 1861 or 1881 without success. As there is a Nercy and a Thanede in the same household in 1871, I'm guessing that Mogene was maybe a mistranscription too.

                          Hi,
Here's the link for the 1871 Scotland census entry I found - Ancestry.co.uk
He's a boarder with the McPherson family.
