  • Searching for Sophia. Help needed please.

Searching for my 4xgreat grandmother Sophia Bacon/Miller. I have her on the 1841 and 1851 census, living with the millers, her son, my 3x great grandfather Benjamins fathers parents.

1841 Census: Heneage Street, Christchurch Spitalfields

Thomas Miller, 50, Shoemaker, Not born in County
    Elizabeth Miller, 45, Middlesex
    Sophia Miller, 20, Middlesex
    Thomas Miller, 8, Middlesex
    Benjamin Miller, 1, Middlesex

    -----------

1851 Census: 8 Heneage Street, Christchurch Spitalfields

Thomas Miller, head, mar. 61, Journeyman Shoemaker, Newington Middlesex
Elizabeth Miller, wife, mar, 59, Pancras Middlesex
Sophia Miller, dau in law, Widow, 27, Charwoman, London Spitalfields
Thomas Miller, son, 17, Porter, London Spitalfelds
Benjamin Miller, son, 10, London Spitalfields

However she must have remarried between 1851 and 1861 as cannot find a death and cannot find her under Miller or Bacon on later census.

Found three possible marriages from Tower Hamlet BMD:

    1856 Sophia BACON /C57 7/365/ Order 2 1856 George COPE /C57 7/365
    1856 Sophia MILLER /C77 1/310/ Order 2 1856 John TEDDERMAN /C77 1/310
    1860 Sophia MILLER /C12 12/341/ Order 2 1860 Stephen WINTER /C12 12/341

There is a Sophia Cope, right age in London on 1861 census, however norn in Kent so do not think this is the right one.

However, today whilst looking at the marriage of my 2 x great grandparents in Bethnal Green 1894, Julia Ann Miller (daughter of Benjamin, Sophias grandaughter) and Josiah Tomkins I noticed the witnesses are John Tomkins (Josiahs dad or brother) and an Elizabeth Tiddleman.

I'm wondering whether Elizabeth Tiddleman is linked to John Tedderman, Perhaps that marriage is the right one, and Elizabeth is maybe a half sister of Benjamin Miller, an auntie of Julia?

Can anyone help me confirm this or otherwise?

    Thanks in advance

Sorry, I haven't read all your post yet, but just confirming the relationship in the 1851 census for Benjamin is wrong then? Should be grandson.......

    Reading on now!

1901 has a Sophia Tidderman aged 78 b Spitalfields (widow) living with her daughter Elizabeth (37) and 2 nieces Sarah and Katherine Miller (14 & 10) so that could be the Elizabeth who was the witness

This name seems to be very rare unless the most common variant is one I haven't tried yet. There is an Elizabeth Tidderman who died Jun 1901 Whitechapel age 88, who would be too old to be Sophia's daughter.

Update - never mind, ignore this!

                Possible death for hubby?

                Deaths Mar 1866
                TEDDENMAN John 36 Whitechapel 1c 283

and slightly possible for Sophia in 1881:

Joseph EMANUEL Head W Male 80 Portsea, Hampshire Retired Traveller
Eliza ABRAHAMS Daur W Female 47 Whitechapel, Middlesex
Jane ABRAHAMS Granddaur Female 14 (City Road), Middlesex
Alfred ABRAHAMS Grandson Male 11 Tottenham, Middlesex
Samuel CORKIE Lodger U Male 20 Germany Cigar Maker
Sophia TIDMAN Serv W Female 45 Spitalfields <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

20 Gt Alie St London, Middlesex

thought her age is 10 years out, so would need further investigation!! lol

                  Sophia and Elizabeth in 1891:

                  RG12; Piece: 278; Folio 49; Page 29

Sophia says she is a wife, but the marital status is widow!

I can't see her in 1871 at the moment.

Great work everyone, thanks that fits perfect. That is correct the relationship is wrong on the 1851, Benjamin Miller should read grandson. His second wife was a Sarah and he certainly had a daughter Catherine Rosetta Miller, down as Katie aged 3 on the 1891 census, so that seems to fit fairly well with neices with Elizabeth Tiddleman/Tedderman on the 1901 census.

Elizabeth has lost a lot of years by 1891/1901 - 26 and 37 when she was 6 in 1861!!!
