  • Can anybody find the Birches?

I have John and Martha Birch at Woodhouse in Leeds in 1851 with their children - William (10), Lot (7), Alice (4), Keziah (2), Ellen (4 months), and their cousin Jane Garth (14) (Class: HO107; Piece: 2321; Folio: 357; Page: 4)

With the exception of their elder brother George who married and had loads of children as well, I cannot find any of them in 1861 or afterwards ...

Can anybody find them for me please?

Thanks Elaine. That's fantastic! Have I ever run the Birch/Garth conundrum past you?

I'll post it up tomorrow as the certs etc are in the office at the bottom of the garden, but it is the relationship between Garths and Birches round about 1835/40 that has got me baffled. John married Martha Garth. George (their son) married Mary Ann Birch and I cannot quite sort out the relationships

                        a possible death
                        Deaths Mar 1877
                        ASPIN Kezia age 28
                        Barnsley 9c 128

                        - maybe Thomas then married sister Ellen.

Cannot see Thomas and Keziah on 1871 census at the moment.

I think Thomas Aspin and Keziah are recorded on the 1871 census under the name of Fotherby.
                          RG10; Piece: 4561; Folio: 94; Page: 35
Thomas' occupation is Stone mason and they have a son Walter, born 1870 - which matches the 1881 census where Thomas is with wife Ellen (Keziah having died in 1877).

If you go back to the 1851 cenus you will see that Thomas is recorded as Thomas Fotherby, grandchild of Elizabeth and John Aspin.

Rings vague bells, that one. Think I've got a lot of shopping to do in town tomorrow!

I've sorted out the Fotherbys now thanks Elaine. I did find that once before, but I think it was a casualty when I lost a months work when I swapped laptops :o
