I downloaded this onto the laptop earlier today as it came up in the optional updates, but what exactly is it? What would I do with it?

Thanks for that, Tim. I understand from that article that it's similar to Adobe Flash, but not much else! I presume that what I downloaded was the equivalent of Flash Player, and if I ever visit a website that has Silverlight content it will use it to play it?

Pretty much... I downloaded and installed it myself a week or so ago, but i havent come across any sites (other than microsofts) that utilise it yet

I can't really see why any site would start using it since Flash is so popular, but I suppose it won't do any harm to keep it...
