  • Middlesex Regiment?

I have a 1902 death certificate of a child, on the occupation part it says>Daughter of William Simes a private in the Middlesex regiment.

Where do I look to find out any further info on the childs father? I have googled but cannot find anything at all?

Rosi - are you trying to work back with William's ancestry - or trying to find out something about his army career - or both?

I think you will find that pre WW1 records are at The National Archives - if they have survived.

                      Hi Rosie,

I can't help with your question but had to look when I saw your title & then jumped when I saw the name you were asking after.

My Dad born 1908 was in the Middlesex Regt & I have a photo of one his best mates, (I think he may have married into the family but haven't gone along that route).
His name was Joe Simes, any link do you think?

Typical, do you think I can lay my hands on the pic at the moment, grr, so frustrating.

If you can get to Kew, Rosi, it "ought" to be dead easy. The records aren't filmed, they are in alpha order in cardboard boxes. You chose the right box (WO 97/6033 Sykes Joe - Symonds A 1900-1913 ) for when you think he would have been discharged and work your way through. This assumes he wasn't killed but was discharged to a pension.

                          Hi Viv

Not sure if Joe could be one of mine, not done much research on this side of my family but I intend to make a start, so I will let you know if there is a possibality.

Kevin Asplin's site might be useful (I presume in view of the dates its Boer War especially as the daughter's middle name was Pretoria)

The Asplin Military Resources Page 2

If you scroll down this page there is a section headed Middlesex Regiment and on that page there is a private W Sime 7087 2nd Battalion which might be your man

                                Rosi,

You could also find out where the Middlesex Regiment has its museum or archive. A visit to the museum should at least give you interesting background and at best there may be some personal detail on your man.

Jackie's suggestion about Kevin's site is probably a good one as it would explain his absence in 1901, he would have been away at the Boer war
