  • Northrop lineage

Has anybody researched the Northrop family history? I believe my ancestors come from the Harlston area of Cambridgeshire.

    Thanks, John

How far back have you traced your family so far, starting from yourself?

      Northrop lineage

Good morning Mary, thank you for your reply.
I am the son of Stanley Northrop and Mary Egerton. I have traced back the Northrop line to a William Northrop born in 1814, he married twice, firstly to a Mary Anne Hayle and then to Sarah Payner in 1843.
I have been unable to find the parents of William, however, I believe it to be a John Northrop born in 1791 who married a Mary Peters but I am unsure and am therefore stuck.
      I hope you can help.
      many thanks, John.

Do you have the marriage certificate of William and Sarah? That should give his father's name and occupation.

William's living in Harston with Sarah in 1851, and says he's 36 and was born in Harston:

          I can't find a matching William in 1841 - have you?

The Cambridgeshire Baptism index (1801-1837) is online, but I can't see him there either - there's only a William Northrope born in Harston in 1826:

OK, I think I've got him now in 1841, mistranscribed as Northan, living in Harston with Maryann and two children called James and Sarah Shaw. He's an ag lab, born in county. Age is hard to read, but appears to be 29.

This is the marriage I found on FreeBMD:

                Marriages Dec 1843
                Churchman Thomas Chesterton 14 71
Ison Mary Ann Chesterton 14 71
                Northrop William Chesterton 14 71
                Rayner Sarah Chesterton 14 71

And this appears to be the first marriage:

                WILLIAM NORTHROP
                Male

                Marriages:
                Spouse: MARY ANN HALL
Marriage: 25 DEC 1838 Harston, Cambridge, England

Can't see a death for Mary Ann in the right area, though.
