  • Re. Mayor of Birkenhead

    Hello again

Right i found out his name, it was Thomas Shaw. He married a lady named Molly but as i dont know her maiden name or if Molly was short for mary or margaret i cant pinpoint them.

I know they married in Birkenhead and i know they had a daughter who is still alive so i wont mention names.

Any ideas how to get past this?

Im just doing this friend a favour so certs are out the window.

You could try contacting the Wirral Museum - Birkenhead Town Hall I would have thought they'd have information on past mayors.

Pieced together from Google book search:

Pawnbroking: An Aspect of British Social History - Page 72
            by Kenneth Hudson - Business & Economics - 1982 - 168 pages

When the Association began its new career in 1895, its Committee included two people who became very important in the pawnbroking world during the first quarter of the twentieth century, Henry Arthur Attenborough, as Chairman, and Walter Bull, as Treasurer. (…)

By this time, it was clear that pawnbroking was beginning to shed its early Victorian image.

'The Provincial Pawnbroker,' wrote the Gazette, 'is surely, but slowly it may be, making his way in public estimation. The prejudices of the old times die hard, but happily they are quietly disappearing. It was thought a great advance that the late Mr John Colburn was elected Lord Mayor of York; then we had Mr Hart, Mayor of Canterbury; later Mr Cooke (…) Now we have Mr Shaw, Mayor of Birkenhead; and not to endeavour to enumerate Magistrates, Aldermen and Town Councillors.

This snippet suggests that he was already Mayor in 1894:

                Page 1253

Mr. H. Percy Boulnois (president) occupied the chair, and there were present the
Mayor of Birkenhead (Alderman Shaw), Mr. HC Pedley (ex-mayor of Crewe)...

It suggests that he was a pawnbroker by occupation, which may help if we can find him on the censuses.

Can send you the image if you want Danny.

His wife is Esther but think she might be his second wife image has him as 63 and Esther 38.

Mind you theres no older children in 1891 so maybe he married for the first time later in life.

                            Yes please

I think his first wife was a Mary or Margaret as my friend says his wife was a Molly.

No daughters on the 1901, there's a Thomas, Eric, Norman and Harry. Mind you at 38 Ester was young enough to have more children later.

                                      1901 they are in Birkenhead.

My friend did say that Thomas was the living womans Grandad but when he drew out the rough tree he put her down as daughter.

Im guessing that my friends nan must be Thomas's granddaughter.
