  • Finding Fosters on census

Please could I have some assistance locating a family who got about a bit lol. (and they're not even MY Fosters!).

John William Lawrence Foster bc 1820 married to
Mary Ann Tuxford Howe bc1816. Married Peterborough JunQ 1844.

1861: RG 9 2345 page 15 living South Kyme, Lincs.

    Children Clara B, c1851 London
    John W, c1854 Hull
    Frances A c1856 Yorks
    Emily c1860 Billinghay

John and Mary both died in Poplar district (from FreeBMD) 1893 and 1874 respectively.

I am a bit grumpy with the new layout on Ancestry and can't find them after 61. John was a medical assistant btw.

    Thanks
    Rose

Have you tried switching back to the old "searching experience" on Ancestry, Rosie?

I think I have got John in 1851. He is in Barnes Kent (apothecary) but where is Mary? HO107 1605 page 12.

Do you know whether Clara was born before or after the 1851 census, Rose?

there is a clara Foster b march Q1851 in Clerkenwell, and I think that is her place of birth in 1871. Clara is aged 10 and 20 on the censuses so I think she must have been born before the census in 1851.

EDIT: Clara is unmarried in 1881 and living in Bromley St Leondard, London. RG 11 496 page 1.

EDIT#2. poor Clara is in the workhouse in 91 aged 39 RG12 1352 pae 24.

On the 1871 it says "paralysis of the foot" for Clara, doesn't it?

Oh dear, I'm not getting anywhere with finding John on the 1881 (nor Mary and Clara in 1851 but since they liked travelling so much perhaps they were in one of the "lost pieces" - or perhaps in hospital with just initials?)

Thanks for looking Kate. Yes I saw that about Clara's foot, but only on the one census.

I haven't had any luck finding John and Mary on the 41 either. John's father was supposedly a surgeon (also called John), which fits what with John being medical. I have found a bap on the IGI for John - parents John and Betty, in Bradford. Am now trying to find them on the 41 but I know it's quite possible they were dead by then.
