  • Struggling to make sense of the Baileys??

    Hi

I am really struggling to make sense of the Bailey's in my tree?? Can anyone help unravel them??

I recently sent for the marriage cert of my gt gt grandfather Joseph BAILEY

He was born in Hollingworth, Cheshire in 1852/3 and is clearly found in the 1861 census.

    Class: RG9; Piece: 3004; Folio: 70; Page: 17

He is living with his mother Hannah Knowles her husband George and his sister Sarah Ann Bayley.

On his wedding cert his father was named as Samuel Hatches Bailey and was a joiner.

In the 1851 census, I've got Sarah Ann living with her mother Hannah and her mother (in law?) Martha again in Hollingworth, Cheshire. There is also a brother Charles?

    Class: HO107; Piece: 2239; Folio: 191; Page: 13

But, I have searched and searched and can't find any sign of them in 1841??

Can anyone find them in 1841??

In 1851, Hannah is down as Unmarried.

This is that family in 1841:
Lee Bailey 40 - (Out?) Labourer
    Martha Bailey 40
Martha Bailey 20 - Cotton Maker
Hannah Bailey 17 - Cotton Maker
    Charles Bailey 8

All born in county. Living Newton, Cheshire.

Class: HO107; Piece 101; Book: 1; Civil Parish: Newton; County: Cheshire; Enumeration District: 1; Folio: 13; Page: 21; Line: 24; GSU roll: 241239.

Thanks ever so much, for that Tracy, I was going round in circles!!
Am now assuming that Joseph must have been illigit and maybe he was told that his father was called Samuel Hatches Bailey??

Pure surmise but in 1841 there was a Samuel Hatcher or possible Hatches, aged 25, living in Great Budworth Cheshire, occupation carpenter. I wonder if this was Joseph's father?

          Thanks Judith

Its all still a bit of a mystery. He obviously knew who is father was, as he was named on his wedding cert?
I wonder, if this was his father, why he didn't marry Hannah?

          All very strange.

          Any help or clues??

Because he didn't want to. His parents disapproved. He was betrothed to another. Who knows!
