  • Intermittent Browns

I've found OH's Brown ancestors popping up here and there but I'd really like to get a more complete picture.

Edward Dobson Brown was born about 1815 in Sunderland. In 1851 he's a butcher aged 36 at 3 Embetton Place Liverpool. In 1871 he's a mariner aged 56 at 3 Queen Street Sunderland. He died in Sunderland q4 1878 10a 345 aged 65.

His wife Margaret Young (surname from daughter's birth certificate) was born about 1823 in Sunderland. She's with Edward in 1851 and 1871 aged 31 and 48 respectively.

I can't find them in 1861 or Margaret after 1871, or a likely marriage.

    Children are:
Mary born about 1843 in Sunderland (with parents in 1851 aged 6). I don't have anything reliable after that.

Mary C born about 1848 in Sunderland (with parents in 1851 aged 3 and 1871 aged 23).

OH's ancestor Fanny Sherratt b. 8 Oct 1849 Liverpool (got cert.). No problem with her - found her on all censuses. In 1861 shes a "visitor" aged 12 with an Anderston family in Sunderland. I can't tie them in at all.

Emily born 1850/1 in Liverpool (aged 2 months in 1851)

John E born about 1853 in Liverpool (with parents in Sunderland in 1871, a butcher aged 23, by 1881 he's in Monkwearmouth).

William K born about 1854 in Liverpool. Same censuses as John E.

Annie born about 1856 in Sunderland. With parents in 1871.

My real wish is to find where the people were in 1861 and 1881 (and later).

There's a death of an Emily Brown in Liverpool Sept 1852 8b 153

I've struggled but can't find any children of Edward & Margaret Brown in 1861.

Uncle John, you've probably seen these sites but just in case you haven't they may come in useful.
Suderland Council site is good for marriages as you can see what both surnames are, not good for births and deaths though.

Durham Records are transcribing a lot of Sunderland and Monkwearmouth.

Thank you both very much for looking. After I posted, I went through the whole family again and was only able to add in the full addresses for census entries I'd found before.

Edward could have been at sea in 1861 but it's a complete mystery where the others are hiding.

I found that one. I've put it down as a possible.

Hadn't seen that one. I'll stick it in as a query. She is shown as married, which is a plus.

Thank you for that matching pair. The unusual middle name is a help.

I'll have a look for likely Mitchells already in my tree to marry her off to.

I'd better get my tea before starting on this lot!

Obviously the Annie/Mitchell marriage cert. would confirm or disprove a link, but I can't really justify £7 for a side-shoot. He doesn't match any of my other Mitchells.
