I am about to order a couple of marriage certificates for Alfred Ernest Cole.

I hesitate because the references are:

    Dec qtr 1895, Plymouth, 5b 589

    Jun qtr 1896, Plymouth, 5b 588

How is the later event on an earlier page?

    (Or am I being thick?)

Far be it from me to say you are thick, Mark.

The pages are started with each quarter, so that it just depends how many events are in that quarter. I guess if you have ancestors whose names begin with A you might even have single digit pages.

I thought I was being thick Nell! I must admit I didn't realise that the pages started each quarter, but I probably wouldn't have queried it if they hadn't been just one number apart...

Can you feel me blushing from there?

Each Q the records for the districts with the same volume number are sorted into a particular (always the same) order.

5b always starts with Axminster (will always have page 1 etc), then Honiton.......the ninth district is Plymouth and the last one (20th) is Holsworthy.

          Erm ... please sir

Why has he married twice in such short a space of time ?
and when you say you're going to order a couple of his certs, does that mean he married more often ?

(please don't throw things at me ... I'm tired)

Absolutely Zoe! If I'm right it is the 1896 and he married his first cousin ... (which could explain a lot as he is my wife's ancestor .... )

Biut I'm probably wrong, so rather than wait twice I'm going to splash out ...
