Post 1920 army records have to be applied for from the army direct at the Army Personnel Centre, (APC) in Glasgow

For the early 1800s - up to about 1850 (I think) if a man was discharged to a pension from the army, his name should appear in TNA's catalogue: search the Catalgoue by surname, then put WO 97 in the bottom box. This is only the index. The records on microfilm will have more information.

I have just been looking into this and you have to send in a form to the army veterans thingy Veterans-UK.info and also get permission of next of kin. Deciding who is next of kin could be difficult....
