You won't find anything after about 1920. World War One is the last one available and a lot of those were destroyed by enemy bombing in WW2.

You can get WW 2 records if you are you are the next of kin

Post 1920 army records have to be applied for from the army direct at the Army Personnel Centre, (APC) in Glasgow

Some of the WW1 pension records are available on Ancestry if you have a subscription.

There is much more not online that is.

I'm afraid you can't do your family history solely online, unfortunately.

For the early 1800s - up to about 1850 (I think) if a man was discharged to a pension from the army, his name should appear in TNA's catalogue: search the Catalgoue by surname, then put WO 97 in the bottom box. This is only the index. The records on microfilm will have more information.

I think that Ancestry is planning to put a lot of these records online.

There's a bit of documentation available via TNA's Documents Online website.

I have just been looking into this and you have to send in a form to the army veterans thingy Veterans-UK.info and also get permission of next of kin. Deciding who is next of kin could be difficult....
