  • Help needed with dating this photo

I have been sent some great photos and I'm trying to date one.
We are not sure who the elderly lady is but it says Granny Howell on the back.

Can anyone put a date to it please??

Looking at the two different styles of dresses, I would say it's late 1930 early 1940's

Seems the same dates as some of my old photo's

    Kind regards

I'd say it was a bit earlier than the 30s - say mid-late 20s...... the young girl's dress looks like it's got a dropped waist...... fashionable in the 20s.

Must admit looking at the girls hair and outfit I would have said 20s as well.

            Thanks Dorothy, Barbara

Your input is very much appreciated.

I'm still not sure who this is yet

My GGGrandmother died in 1917 aged 91 years. I would dearly love it to be her but I'm not sure.

Ho hum...why did they write Granny Howell...why not her full name.
Did they not realise we would be trying to work it out now :D

            Thanks for your help ladies

It's too late for your gggran, but does anyone else think the younger lady could be pregnant?

Could the younger lady be Granny Howell? I agree that she looks as if she could be pregnant. I think I can see a ring on her wedding finger.

Thanks everyone for your input. It's gratefully received.

I also agree about the wedding ring. That lady, it is believed is Maggie Ward, nee Hughes, a relative on the paternal side of the family.

We are still not sure who the elderly lady is.

The lady who sent me this photo...

Welcome to FTF Alison ( Alison joined a few days ago )

thinks this may be her G Grandmother Mary who was born c 1856. She died in 1934 aged 77, according to her burial record.
If this is her and your dating of the photo is correct she would have been about 66/67 yrs old. She looks older to me but as life was much harder in those days its possible??

Other stumbling block is that Alison's nan thinks the ladys name is Jane.
As far as we are aware, there isn't a Jane Howell that would fit.

Thanks for all your replies and for taking the trouble to help out.

                    Kindest regards
                    Allie
