  • Finding adoptees in Assize Records

I have been contacted by somebody hoping to find details of their adoption in Assize Records. This would be about the 1940s.

I have no experience whatsoever in this field. Would this be an appropriate avenue for an adoptee to explore? It sounds time-consuming, to say the least.

I don't definitively know the answer to this, but I would have thought that with all the secrecy that surrounds adoption, this would be a non-starter.

Although I have never used Assize records as modern as this, I cannot imagine that they would be listed online, or indeed anywhere, with identifying information.

Considering the hoops adoptees have to jump through to get at these Court Records legally, I would think that the casual researcher wouldn't get anywhere.

(Weren't many adoptions done in Magistrates Courts? Heard in Camera?)
