  • Scotland to Canada via Indonesia?

I have an Andrew Carrick born at sea in 1856 (according to Canadian census), the year the family left Scotland for Canada.

I've just come across two trees on Ancestry which have his place of birth as Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia.

Can anyone tell me if there is any reason why emigrant ships from Scotland/England to Canada in mid 1850s might have needed to go via Indonesia?

Totally the wrong direction! To get to Indonesia they'd have to go via South Africa (no Suez canal). And that would take three times as long as sailing the Atlantic. Sounds like a mix-up of two families. But you'd probably come to the same conclusion!

      Thanks Uncle John!

Looking at a world map, I just couldn't see why they would go anywhere near Indonesia, but, as my geographical knowledge is dreadful and my understanding of sailing, currents etc non-existent, I thought I'd just check.

There's no Carrick at all on the only Indonesian BMD site I could find.

Kylejustin - I assumed my people must have picked up the weird place of birth from OneWorldTree or similar.

I've now written to one of them via Ancestry to ask for more details on the Indonesian birth!!

Irritatingly, they have some of my stuff tacked on to their trees which one of my contacts must have passed on.

I've found Ancestry transcribers assuming that all American births are USA. Not helped by Ancestry only allowing USA and Canada as p.o.b. on searches. My South American births are clearly shown as such on the English census.
