Bessie Miller born c 1874 Shoreditch, parents William & Mary

    1881 census - Betsey Miller
    RG11; Piece: 386; Folio: 73; Page: 30

    1891 census - Bassey Miller
    RG12; Piece: 243; Folio 188; Page 26

Marries in Shoreditch in August 1891 using the name Bessie Miller - age on MC 18 years.

The following birth registration is not the right one!
    Betsey Miller
    1872 Jan-Feb-Mar
    Whitechapel
    Volume: 1c
    Page: 361

Can anyone see a suitable birth registration

(Sorry have amended posting slightly - originally asked for 1901 information but realised I already had this! Too much wine with all the party celebrations!)

There's a big gap between Betsey and her big sister. Possibly William married Betsey's mother as a 2nd wife? Betsey may have been born with a different surname?

According to 1881 census, Rosey A, Miller was born abt 1862 in Shoreditch. Mary (mother) also born Shoreditch, William born abt 1827 in Colchester, though I can't locate him in 1871. 1881 he's a French polisher.

Until I get Bessie sorted then I can't really go any further back.

Possibly Elizabeth Miller Dec 1873 Shoreditch.

My gx2 aunt was always known as Betsey but was registered and baptised Elizabeth, so maybe your Betsey was an Elizabeth as well.

I saw that one Jane - and at the moment it seems the closest.
Just annoying that she used Betsey/Bessie on census and marriage.

Just noticed Rosey on 1881 census is probably Mary A (shown on 1871 census as being born 1861). Image badly scribbled.

                          Was "Rosey A" / "Mary A", actually Rosemary A?

No I think it was just a bad transcription of the 1881 census. It looks as if the enumerator started to write Betsey's name in and then changed his mind and wrote Mary over the top!

I'd go for the plain Elizabeth as she would have been 7 in 1881. The other girl would only have been 6 (if they got the ages right!!)

*tries not to mention she might not have been registered at all*

Just to ensure you don't find tracing this lot too easy, William says 1871 born Coggeshall and 1881 Colchester.

Yes I saw that Nell, and to top it all they are in Shoreditch in 1871 and probably on the missing Shoreditch pages in 1861 and 1851! :(
