    On the 1841 census there is a Hulse family, recorded as follows (in the order I have given)

    Mary aged 50 dressmaker
    Elizabeth aged 20
    Charlotte aged 20
    James aged 25 - artist
    Herbert aged 5 (transcribed as Harbert)

    living North Pirehill, Newcastle under Lyne, Staffs
    lass: HO107; Piece 1009; Book: 5; Civil Parish: Newcastle Under Lyne; County: Staffordshire; Enumeration District: 8; Folio: 6; Page: 4;

    If this is the right one, then may be mother Alice has died.

      Would Stoke on Trent be a possible registration district?

          Hi Elaine

          Thats the right family.

          I also thought Alice died quite young as i wasnt able to see her on any census a while back.

                  The closest I can get is a William Henry Hulse born 1837 Hanley - apprentice grocer.
                  Not sure that is your man as the occupation doesn´t match 1861

                  Cantsee anything else at the moment.
