I'm asking for exact searches on the 1900 US Census for Shillin* born England.

So why are several of the hits for boarders with unrelated names?

They're boarding with families who do fit your criteria, Phoenix. I think the US census search is different from the UK one in a few odd ways like that.

      Thanks, Kite!
These three are consecutive: I presume that the Shillin*s who are head of household are not born in England, otherwise they ought to appear?

John Hunter Raleigh Ward 2, Wake, North Carolina
Hezekiah Bird Covington, Miami, Ohio 06
      William Lawrence Wheatland, Mercer, Pennsylvania

It's quite useful, but seems most peculiar!
