  • Census lookup request for Playford in Docking Norfolk

Been asked by a relation to see if i can help trace her paternal line of Playford.

Have them on 1901 and 1881, but need help to sepearte/answer question on a James and Susan Playford and need lookups on 1851, 1861 and 1871 census.

1851 census to see if we can find a James Playford born c1837 (according to 1881 census) in Docking.

1861 census James and Susan Playford with son John who was born c1869 Docking.

1871 James and Sarah Playford with John now age 12.
The Susan MAY be a different age and place of birth, as I think the Susan on the 1861 died and James had actually married a different Susan.

    Many thanks
    Trevor

          Hi Tinkerbe
I assume that is 1851 census, which confirms a family group.

I now need the 1861 and 1871 to see if the two Johns who were married to two different susans was in fact the same man.

          Thanks

Be honest, transcripts for any playfords in Docking would be welcome and I will then investigate all the connections, but need census years to help understand your replies.

            Thanks

Hi Trevor, have just looked in the 1871 census for you and found this entry
                      East Street Docking
James Playford Hd M 38 Ag Lab born Docking
                      Susan " wife 23 "
                      John " son 1 "

The age isn't quite right for the James you originally mentioned, but with Susan's age it could indicate a second marriage, but then again, would they call a son John if they already had one by James' 1st marriage? unless of curse the older John had died??

As you said, maybe there were two James in Docking, born not too far apart
                      Val

                              Hi Tinkerbe

That's the puzzle I was trying to work out and the 1871 census answer from Val and George has added weight to my assumption that James had lied about his age on the 1881 census and was older than his wife (Susan Bond).

According to the 1871 census,(see Val's reply in thread), James would have been born c1833
The 1851 census you sent me has his age as c1833 (parents James and Rose)
The 1881 census has him (with wife Susan Bond), born c1837, but there is no record of a James on the 1851 or 1871 who was born around that time.
I think if we find James on the 1861 census, just prior to his marriage to Susan Saddler in 1867, it could confirm this.

Val: The John on the 1871 census you found would have been from James' first marriage to Susan Saddler, who dies just a few years later age 25.

On the 1861 there is a James Playford born c1833 Docking with parents John and Loveday
                                  RG9; Piece: 1250; Folio: 65; Page: 34

                                  - the children's names match those on the 1851 census.

Trevor, on the 1861 census the household go over to the next page with Robert Playford a grandson aged 4 a scholar born in Docking - hope this makes sense - Val
