  • question about foundling hospital

Should I automatically assume that all births at a foundling hospital are illegitmate?

  • #2
    No far from it.

A foundling is simply a child that is abandoned for any number of reasons.

Is this the Thomas Coram foundling hospital?

How could I get records? I live in Canada. Would they still have them for a 1773 birth?

I don't think there would actually be births at a foundling hospital, Debbie - I thought it was a place where they looked after abandoned babies?

There would be records of babies/children they took in, and circumstances surrounding them.

Just because someone was christened at the Foundling hospital chapel, it doesnt always mean they were a foundling.

Do you know your chappie was?

That's quite a fancy name for a foundling, Debbie. I wonder if his father worked there?

Where have you got this information from?
