He was a carpenter in 1861 if I've got the right family.
Did he die before 1881? Can't see him in 1881.
Yes he did, Q4 1871 at Guiltcross aged 31.

Is Benchman a likely specialism for a carpenter?

From an Australian site dealing with industrial injuries:

          Sorry Margaret.

I think the first letter is a P, going by the Porter on page 1, and the same occupation appears on P3, written a little more clearly, with ag added after it.

I searched Pench* as occupation on 1881 and the results seem to be badly spelled pensioners.

I thought at first it was a P. Then I enlarged the image to 150% and could detect the faint line of the rest of a B. I deduced the occupation from his 1861 occupation of carpenter. Of course if he died from getting too close to the circular saw in the manner of James Bond that would clinch it.

Uncle John - I thought the same about the faint line making it a B, and even used the little magnifying glass firefox add-on for a closer look. But James Barolo's occupation, on P3, looks very like Robert Rust's. As Robert died relatively young, I thought there was maybe the possibility of a sick pension of some sort?

I see what you mean about James Barolo. Is it a misspelling orf "pensioner"? Though I didn't think that came in until Lloyd George.

I've had a look at the descriptions of Districts 6 and 7 in case anything jumped out at me. And a few adjacent census pages but no inspiration there.

Pensioner is what i thought it might be. Usually only army pensioners are listed as such.

I'll have to look for him before 1871.

1851 Robert is with his parents age 10. 1871 with his brother as earlier in this thread.

I can't find him in 1861. So,it's possible that he was in the army, so a pensioner in 1871.

Is there anywhere I can find out other than the National Archives?

Is my carpenter in 1861 the wrong family?

Where do you think you found him in 1861?

                        Whats the ref?

Sorry, the one I found in 1861 is the wrong family.

I presume you have the family in 1841 and 1851 (Robert transcribed as Robart).
And William and family without Robert in 1861 (RG9/1236/70/7)

I tried various searches in 1861 and have come up with a "way-out" possibility:

Footman with the Redesdale/Mitford family in Gloucestershire:
Richard Rust age 24 born East Harting Norfolk
                          RG9/2238/70/16

Probably not him, but you may want to wangle a "noble connection" into your tree!

                            Hi Uncle John

Oh I have a few ancestors that worked for the nobility. That seems to be as close as I get

Don't have that Richard as yet. But the Rust line is still work in progress, he may turn up later.
