  • Help with Joseph Bailey

Can't seem to find Joseph Bailey's birth records.

He's in the 1881 census living at Market Street, Hollingworth, Cheshire
He's 29 listed as a cotton sizer b. Hollingworth, Cheshire
with wife Hannah 27 b. Mottram, Cheshire
    children; john 5, lee 2, Harriet 8

Can anyone throw any light on Joseph in the earlier census's and when (roughly) he was born - so I can order his birth cert??

    Thanks in advance

Well if he's 29 in 1881 he would be born around 1852. If you can't find a record, its possible he was born with a different surname. Do you have his marriage cert, as that would give his father's details?

Off to have a census search now.

Can't see him in 1871, there is this chap living in Hollingworth in 1861

Joseph Bailey, parents William & Harriot born abt 1850, Huddersfield, Yorkshire

But with a relatively common name like Bailey, plus the age discrepancy, you can't be sure.

Hollingworth is in Ashton under Lyne registration district so none of those look likely.

Ok, trying a different tack. 1881 census says wife Hannah was born Mottram 1854. There are 4 candidates in 1871 census:

                  Hyde, Cheshire
Hannah Bradley abt 1853 Mottram, Cheshire, Daughter of Fortington & Anna

                  Mottram, Cheshire
Hannah Halland abt 1853 Mottram, Cheshire, Daughter of Eliza

                  Mottram, Cheshire
Hannah Leech abt 1854 Mottram, Cheshire, Daughter of John & Harriet

                  Mottram, Cheshire
Hannah Shepley abt 1854 Mottram, Cheshire, Daughter of William & Betsy

                  Mottram, Cheshire
Hannah Wood abt 1854 Mottram, Cheshire, Daughter of Andrew & Isabella
