      Thanks OC I thought that too but then I had another look and it looks like Mepenzer to me I wondered if it was the name of a ship ????????

        It is Messenger, Val; it just has that old kind of double s in it.

          I agree. If you go on to image no. 55 there is a dress maker there and the double s is written the same.

          The bit underneath (Woolwich) I think also belongs ie. "HM Dockyard Woolwich"

              Yes, the name of a ship isn't an occupation, though I agree it does look like Mepenzer.
              I've been caught out with these double ss before, thinking they were fs!

                  Next time you encounter a double s like that you will be forewarned! It's all down to experience. I look at handwriting I spent ages trying to read unsuccessfully and now it seems so clear when I know what it says!
