  • Any ideas on occupation?

Can anyone please help me with occupation of George Elliott on the 1851 census?

    Ref is HO107/1955/14/20

Looks like Waiting Cl (or U) Att (or Alt)

There's an attorney on the next page, and I've found a couple of hits on Google book search for "waiting clerk", so I'd guess he was an attorney's waiting clerk, whatever that may be.

There's a sort of definition here:

Thank you Mary, that seems very likely. I had guessed clerk, but didn't think of attorney.

Mary, crossed with your second post - thank you again.

I imagine they were called waiting clerks because they were waiting for promotion, something like midshipmen in the navy?

Maybe - or it could be a synonym for "attending clerk", ie. a clerk in attendance on the attorney. It isn't a current term in the legal profession, so I don't really know.
