  • How do I find RG13 Piece 3392 etc on Ancestry?

    I have been given the reference RG13; Piece 3392; Folio: 13; Page: 17 (Thanks Merry).

    How do I call it up in Ancestry?

    I have only recently started playing with it and am trying to duplicate findings provided by helpers on this site.

    Why could all my ancestors not have come from Scotland!

    Go to the search page on Ancestry for 1901.

    Scroll down a bit and enter the reference number where it gives you the option to do so.

    I don't normally enter anything else, not even a name, as you will only get 20 or so results and you can spot the one you are after.

      OC,

      That was quick work! Thanks.

      BUT, why did you pick the 1901 Census?

        Someone will correct me if I am wrong ;)
        but I believe RG13 = 1901
        RG11=1881, Etc...

          Each government department is/was allocated a code to identify its files. RG stands for Registrar General's office. They allocated a different number to each census. The earlier censuses with HO numbers refer to the Home Office.

            Thanks Bridget and Uncle Tom,

            Now I know. In fact, it is obvious, when you know the answer!

            Have just been to the reference on Ancestry. OK

            Now I am just awaiting my turn to use it.
