  • Family Search and Firefox

Over the last couple of weeks, each time I go to FamilySearch to search the IGI, any details I have entered for the previous search are still in the boxes and have to be deleted before I can start. This doesn't apply if I use IE.

Does anyone know if there is a setting I can alter so that previous search details are automatically removed when I leave the site but don't actually close my browser please?

It's a nuisance Jean - especially if my previous search was for all children of a couple and I then search for an individual's birth, forgetting the last parents' names will still be on the page, and get no results.

I'm assuming it must be some sort of save option on firefox as I tested on IE and the search page clears automatically each time I leave the site.

Try Tools - Options - Privacy - Saved Forms and untick "Save information I enter in forms and the search bar".

I think this applies to all sites, so if you untick it, it won't save your personal information in sites that you regularly order goods from, for example.

Thanks Mary - off to give that a go.

No - that didn't do the trick. But perhaps the change takes effect only after the PC has been switched off, so I'll try again later.

You may need to click on the button that says something like "clear saved data now".

                  Then close and reopen Firefox.

                    Thanks Mary.
I clicked the "clear private data" on Tools, closed and reopened Firefox but the search terms still remain even after leaving and re-entering FamilySearch.

Are you using firefox and, if so, do you not have the same problem?

That's odd. I only use Firefox for Ancestry - I use Opera for everything else. I'll try it now with familysearch.

Thanks for going to so much trouble Mary.

I keep hearing Opera mentioned lately. Does it have any particular advantages over Firefox and IE?

Not sure if I've understood the problem. If I search with Firefox, then open another site in the same tab, and then return to familysearch using the back button, the original search details are still there, but IE behaves in the same way.

I've used Opera for years - it's my favourite because it's much quicker than the other browsers. I'm on dial-up, so the speed makes a big difference; you may not notice it if you have broadband.

However, there are some sites it can't cope with (seems to be a Java problem), mainly those where you have to sign in with a password or make secure payments, so I use Firefox for those. Ancestry and TNA are the main ones I have to use it for.

Oh, and it doesn't do that really annoying thing that Firefox and IE do - when you hit the back button they ask you if you want to re-send form data, and if you say no, they won't let you go back.

Opera does what I would expect a browser to do - it lets me go back to the previous page without resubmitting data.

When I use FamilySearch, the original search details remain whether I return in the same tab or open a new one. This is a very recent change for me and, although it's not a big deal, it was much quicker and easier the old way, rather than having to remember to clear each time. I thought there might have been a simple option box to tick/untick somewhere on FamilySearch or Firefox.

Thanks for the Opera information. I'll have a look at it.

Try using this link when you open a new tab - works for me:

                                  FamilySearch.org - Search

Thanks Mary but that is the link I already use. Strange the idiosyncrasies of the various PC set-ups aren't they?

I'll try downloading Opera later when I've cooked.

Did you try it? It has the words "clear_form=true" at the end of the link, which is why it works. I tested it in Firefox.

Yes - I've just gone back to double-check as I had looked at the page which opened but not compared the exact address bar entries. My existing bookmark address is identical to the one you gave above.

Strange! I'm using Firefox version 2.0.0.16. Is that the same as yours?
