  • Are there really new Scottish records on Ancestry?

I was just reading a copy on another forum of an e-mail someone received from Ancestry asking them to resubscribe and listing new items available to view since their last sub

you also have a new set of records from the Scottish census at your disposal.
My sub expired last month and I'm currently waiting, in hope, for a discount offer. Logging in as a registered guest, I can't see that there is anything new in the Scottish census on there.

Is this just a standard all-purpose e-mail from Ancestry or are there new records eg the actual images?

    Hi Gillian

Well I've just been looking at the census's and still no images available, so not sure if they have anything else!

      Thanks Alison.

If they had had the images, I think I would have dashed over to quidco immediately to renew my sub!

Maybe they've loaded some more transcriptions from years where there were some missing.
OR corrected some of the more extreme howlers (or is that wishful thinking?).

Just peeked and the only thing I can see with new beside it is the 1891 census, but no images sadly. I daren't think about how much I have paid to scotlandspeople for credits!!

Oh, now I vaguely remember reading on Ancestry a while ago, a big trumpeting about how they had corrected umpty thousand entries in the Scottish censuses (most of them submitted by me, I reckon, lol).

They were cheekily calling these new records. They aren't, of course, not in the useful sense.

Surely they can't still be claiming new for the 1891 Lyndi! I've never dared total my spend on SP and I delete the acknowledgements of payment immediately they arrive - before OH spots them lol

Uncle John - the howlers have almost been worth it for their amusement value.

OC - I can't believe they could do that! I'm sure if we totalled our submitted Scottish corrections from members of this site alone, they would run into hundreds!

OK for a larf, but not if it's your family name that got mangled. My corrections have mostly been for families I'd already found on SP.

Uncle John - I simply couldn't have afforded to continue tracing my parents' ancestors' siblings without the indexes on Ancestry and, as you know, you can pick up an awful lot of information via the sideshoots.

Mind you - there are times Ancestry has had me screaming with frustration! Even searching by forename alone isn't safe (Rachel as Hatibel and Batchel being a prime example)

I think the census is where SP lets its customers down - the search terms are too restrictive, especially given the Scottish naming patterns and the consequent frequent occurrence of identical names with almost identical years of birth.

Having said that, I think it is a brilliant site, the cert and OPR images are fantastic value and its prompt and helpful customer service is second to none.

Yes, the Scottish censuses on Ancestry do have a "take it or leave it" attitude about them which gets up my nose!

It also annoys me that when I submit a correction, they only correct the individual, not the whole family, proving to me that they just take your word for the correction and don't look at the record.

Hmmmm ... am I the only person who is pleased with the information they've added ?

I had already 'done' Scotlandspeople to death, but it's really nice to see the stuff Ancestry's added to the transcriptions ... like addresses

I tried address searches the other week .... NICE

Perhaps it works if the address is conventional. I've just tried a family living at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow. The "address" is "Janitor and Gatekeeper". The "institution" isn't indexed. And the name is slightly mangled.
