  • Scotland help needed please

Please can anyone help me, I am looking for a Marion Brown dob abt 1841 born in Dalkeith, Scotland. She married an Edmund Steer born Brighton, East Sussex, Edmunds dob is 1838.
I have looked on Ancestry and obviously doing something wrong :o I have traced her back to the 1851 Census at the age of 10, but I don't seem to be able to find her birth or marriage.

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

          Hi Gillie

The IGI has a marriage of an Edmund Steer and Marion Brown 1859 in Edinburgh.

You can download images of Scottish marriages from

Official government source for Scottish genealogy, census and family research - ScotlandsPeople

You need to buy credits in minimum blocks of £6.00 for 30 credits. But the images only cost 5 credits to download (plus a credit to view search results). Scottish marriage certs have the names of both parents of the bride and groom including the mothers' maiden names.

ScotlandsPeople is quite easy to use once you get the hang of it. You should find this marriage easily. Looking for needles in haystacks needs more care, or you'll spend credits on dud results.

If you save the image of the register entry to your PC, the only reliable way I have found to view it is with Microsoft Fax & Image Viewer. You can then save the image to another format but I find the image file ends up many times larger.

Here's what I found searching for Steer/Brown 1855-1860, anywhere in Scotland.

                1859 Steer Edmond / Brown Marion / Newington / Edinburgh city / Midlothian / (GROS ref no. 685/05 0043)
