  • BMD Certificate site to avoid

I posted a similiar thread a while ago but for those that didn't see it or those that are new to ordering certificates, here are some updated details, this site still comes top or high up in results to google searches for bmd certificates. It looks an offficial site but the prices for certificates is best described as excessive. Bear in mind the certs are issued by the GRO anyway and this company is acting as a middleman.

The site url is included in the screenshots, just so you know which one it is. However this is just one of several companies who operate in a similiar way.

At Post #15 you can see a screenshot of the official GRO homepage, make sure you know which is which, it could save £53 per certificate.

For the benefit of overseas folk would like to add to your warning. The price of postage to anywhere in the world is included in the basic GRO price of £7.00.

Surely people don't pay those prices?!!!! They are outrageous. Even if you didn't know you were being ripped off it would deter me from ordering certificates.

        Sue, sadly some people do!

I remember talking to a newby on gr last year and it cost her £48 for two certs.
She didnt know about the gro, I felt really sorry for her and put her right with web addys etc.

Glens message is a good one..

Thats the trouble Sue they do! and think nothing of it.

The girl had only come across GR through a tv ad or she still might be paying £24 a cert!

Sadly its only when you get experienced that the full meaning of "we are a team of experienced researchers specialising in acquiring replacement certificates" becomes clear.

Also those prices are not up front - you only get to see them on a later page - very sneeky :(

I dont know how they stay in business.

I have only met 1 person who was conned by them but I think there must be many more out there who pay exorbitant prices or surely they would sink?

Just to add the maximum you should pay is £10 and that's only if you don't give them the reference.

So by giving the reference you save £3.

i live in australia, and cruising the web, they were the only reliable site. and i know they're correct, because i've got certificates from them, that i already had, to test legitimacy. as for the price, it works out to about 60 dollars a cert. i just thought that was the exchange rate:D

Sorry, who are the only reliable site? The one Glen posted or the GRO???

I don't think anyone is saying the certs that site send are not legitimate certificates, just that they charge a hefty amount to get you a certificate which you could order yourself direct from the GRO.

An English/Welsh cert shouldn't cost more than about $16AU.

                          Glen dear

Could you also post a screen shot of the legitimate and official GRO site, so people know what they should be looking for?

I think it is a very easy mistake to make if you don't know any better.

If you google something like "order UK birth certificate" the top link is

                            UK Birth Certificates
www.Bmd-Certificates.co.uk : Order official birth certificates from General Register Office online

                            Looks official enough. :(

The Official GRO (General Register Office) site

On right hand side, click on Order Online
If you have the GRO reference, then on the first page remember to tick the box confirming this.

                                Thanks Elaine!

I don't know how google arranges these things, but the official GRO site does not come up as the first hit, the other site does.

I was almost caught by this when I lost all my addys and had to google it. It was only because I KNEW that certs are £7, not £25, that I read the site blurb more carefully and backed out.

They don't need to catch many people at £25 a cert to make themselves a nice little income.

I have only ever bought English certs from GRO and always paid 7 pounds each. That includes postage to Australia. Depending on the exchange rate they are between AU$15 and AU$17 each.

                                    Sue,

"There ought to be a law against it, how can people sleep at night."

At those prices, the answer is surely 'in great comfort'.

I see that this firm also offers to provide Scottish certificates. I know that ScotlandsPeople has cut-off dates for online images of register entries, and that if you want a "proper" certificate it costs more, but the mark-up on (let's say) £1.20 could be quite staggering.

Yes I got caught with that site a couple of years ago when I started, you think its the going rate as it so official, but you end up paying double, I was so mad when I found the normal GRo at £7, as you say we live and learn.
