Looks as if it should be Wolstanton (for Burslem).....can't see that he was registered though.

His birth may not have been registered as it wasn't compulsory till 1875.

Where have you looked so far?

If it is Herbert Hulse born Burslem, mother Ann, then the IGI shows his christening 3 Nov 1843 .... but still cannot find birth registration at the moment!

Was he illegitimate? (Elaine's post suggests it, but I thought he was the one whose dad was an artist?)

If he was, then you may be interested to know the proportion of illegitimate births that went unregistered was higher than for the rest of the population...................

                  .
The one I am looking at shows mother Ann on the 1841 census with two other children - no husband present.

1851 census gives mother as widowed.

On his marriage cert it states that his father was James Hulse a Painter.

On closer inspection and help i found a James Hulse an Artist (portrait painter) with a son Herbert born 1837.

I think that my Herbert was Illigitmate and put his uncle down as his father.

Ive found his possible cousins birth (Herbert Hall Hulse) but not his.

I might be thinking of the wrong one!

I think the husband was elsewhere in 1841, but I don't know when he died.
