  • James Hulse Painter

    Hello everyone

Today i recieved a marriage cert for Herbert Hulse who married Ann Davies in Ettingshall Staffordshire 1882.

He states his father as being James Hulse occupation Painter.
Herbert was born c1844 in staffordshire.

I have Herbert on the 1851 census with just his mother Ann who is down as a widow.

    Class: HO107; Piece: 2003; Folio: 357; Page: 19

I have also found Ann on the 1841 census again without husband, but he must be alive still as Herbert is not born yet.

Class: HO107; Piece 987; Book: 8; Civil Parish: Burslem; County: Staffordshire; Enumeration District: 8; Folio: 38; Page: 27; Line: 19; GSU roll: 474619.

Can anybody spot a James Hulse living presumably around Staffordshire on the 1841 census?

    Any help would be great.

This looks like him, not a house painter as I'd assumed, but an artist.

Class: HO107; Piece 1009; Book: 5; Civil Parish: Newcastle Under Lyne; County: Staffordshire; Enumeration District: 8; Folio: 6; Page: 4; Line: 24; GSU roll: 474632.

      That does look like him

Except he seems to be with another family rather than his own.

Also he did have a son Herbert who was born c1844 and on that census there was a Harbert, may have been why he named his own son Herbert.

I found the Harbert Hulse from the 1841 census on the 1881 census as a Housepainter.

Down as Herbert Hall Hulse (Relation?)

Do bear in mind that it has been known for some women to have extremely long pregnancies!

I did some research for a friend and discovered that her grandmother's "father" (ie her great-grandmother's husband) had been dead some 16 years when her grandmother was born, but he was still named as her father on the birth cert

Or, if Mr Hulse was away from home, then it's possible he was missed from the census altogether.........

              Hey Merry

The James Hulse from the 1841 census who is an Artist is also down on the 1851 census as a Portrait Painter as a Widow.

              Class: HO107; Piece: 2001; Folio: 140; Page: 7

It seems to much of a coincidense that 2 James Hulse's had sons named Herbert and were Painters.

              What do you think?

                  Hi Jane

Do you think that in some way the family's were related?

I know i have the correct marriage cert and he names his father as James Hulse Painter.

My feeling would be that Herbert was illegitimate and possibly gave the name of his uncle as father on his marriage certificate - absolutely no proof as yet, just speculation. The other Herbert (Hall) was possibly his cousin. If we can find the baptisms of James and siblings (hopefully a sister Ann) it could tie up.

That does make a lot more sensible.

Just need to find a baptism then
