  • a name question

    hi,

my dads aunt married a man called gerald. i havent got the cert yet as cant aford it.

    now the question is:

on ancestry full list i found their marriage, and he is listed as gerald E Baglow, this is what i have added to my tree, i have gone into him to "neaten up" and try and find a birth. but i cant find 1 for a gerald E, but i do have 1 for a gerald C. would you take the risk on a birth cert?

    i also cant find a death for a gerald E but i do have 1 for a gerald C.

    any suggestions?

Was the marriage in the same general area?

Have you checked there is no marriage for a Gerald C?

her maiden name is lackey, so not very common. its the only baglow/lackey marriage i could find from when she was 16 (1936) until the first child neil was born in 1948.

the marriage i have have for gerald E was in 1946,

i wonder if it was transcribed wrongly. is there anywhere else apart from ancestry that house all the modern day BMD's?

I've just looked at your tree and notice you have listed 2 male Baglow's, had you thought to try to find and contact them?

Is the Gerald C you found the one born 1912?

i do have the sons last known address, but i dont know if they know about me as my dad lost contact with this part of the family over 15yrs ago.

yes the 1912 birth is the only 1 i can find that has a recent death. i was told by a cousin that he had died recently - a few years ago.

Just had a thought... were the baglow births registered in Rotherham

Gerald C's birth and death having both been registerd there suggests not moving from the area,

they were that area - both in worksop. 1 married in don valley and the other in surrey.

Why not contact the son tactfully? Would it be a problem if he knew about you?

no not at all, just maybe a shock if they dont know about us.

i beleive that my dad only lost contact with everyone as we moved house twice in a year and we had some boxes go missing (i'm guessing they may have contained address books etc).

Then I'd say go for it. He'll probably be delighted to hear about his new relatives. I have a sort of the other way round experience - I sort of knew about a half uncle who knew all about me but never dared say he did. When I finally managed to confirm he was a half uncle and track him down (after 30 years) it took me another year to pluck up courage to write. When I did I sent him a simple letter, with a simple family tree and just told him I would be pleased to hear from him or just send him a copy of the complete tree, no strings attached, if he wanted. He was so pleased... I'm glad I did it.
